We believe in teaching through culture, not about culture.
Our sessions are developed and taught by a Traditional Owner and help students to understand and experience Aboriginal culture – Country becomes their classroom. Our session leader, Kai, is a proud Yorta-Yorta Barapa-Barapa man who is passionate about his culture and loves to share his knowledge.
Our fun, interactive, hands-on sessions include:
- Welcome ceremony and traditional dances for different native animals and digeridoo sounds
- Aboriginal artwork, symbols and wildlife tracks, where students get to create their own story (eg. “a day in the life, 50,000 years ago”).
- Traditional storytelling about our wildlife
- Marngrook, with a handmade Marngrook. Students learn about the significance and history of marngrook, with lots of opportunities to ask questions during a game of Marngrook “hot potato”!
- Mini-booklet with lots of information about native plants and their cultural uses, from bush tucker, bush remedies and making Aboriginal tools. The booklet is perfect for children just starting to learn about Aboriginal culture.
